For centuries lovers have swapped a lock of hair to symbolise their love for one another and in Victorian times intricately braided and woven hair jewellery became quite the thing to give as the ultimate expression of love and friendship.
The British Museum recently hosted a fascinating exhibition of hair work jewellery. Most of the pieces on display were made from human hair. Because human hair is so fine it lends itself to much more intricate designs but there are some similarities with modern horse hair jewellery which is having a bit of a fashion "moment".
